To clear the automobile engine of the heat generated when the petrol burns a cooling system is used. As petrol burns at more than 700 degrees centigrade it is extremely important that a cooling system is present. Almost all cars are cooled with the use of water which is pumped via channels in the engine block. The heated water coming from the engine, is itself cooled by cold air flowing through a radiator. However, certain cars and virtually all motorcycles are air-cooled. The cool air passes through metal fins positioned around the cylinders and then carries the heat away.
Airflow through the radiator is normally achieved automatically as the vehicle travels at speed, however, a fan is fitted to assist when the vehicle is slow moving or stationary for long periods.
